Opening Residence Week

Your first class as an EMBA student— Strategic Thinking for the Executive Leader — takes place over five days in August at the University of Delaware’s Virden Conference Center in Lewes. This course provides practical strategies for thinking, working, and communicating well as a team of executives with leadership responsibilities. It also gives you a chance to get to know your classmates and EMBA program faculty and to begin forming close working relationships with them that will last throughout the program and beyond.

The week is casual but stimulating as we introduce a framework, rooted in corporate strategy, for understanding the relevance and interrelations among the various subject areas you will be studying during the program. Class sessions and activities are scheduled throughout the mornings, afternoons, and evenings in order to make the most of the week.

Classes and meals are held in the main building of the conference center, while overnight accommodations are provided in two adjacent buildings. You’ll have your own room with bathroom, two twin beds, a desk and chair, wireless connectivity for your laptop, air conditioning, cable television, telephone, alarm clock, coffee maker, and daily cleaning service. The atmosphere is quiet and comfortable, allowing you to focus on getting your EMBA degree off to a great start.

International Residency

International business issues are woven throughout the EMBA curriculum, but there is nothing like a first-hand experience in another country to bring these lessons home. That’s why the final semester of the program features a 10-day international study abroad experience. Recent destinations have included China and South America.

The destination of the trip is determined each year by the Executive Education Committee based on contemporary business issues, world events, logistics, company contacts, and relationships with other academic institutions. During the trip, you will visit businesses in one or more countries, meeting with top executives of both local and multinational corporations. You will also have the opportunity to meet with local government officials and professors from local business schools or one of our international partner institutions. You’ll be accompanied by University of Delaware faculty who will help connect your experiences to academic theory and business practices, and you’ll return with a deeper appreciation and understanding of how to conduct business in foreign countries.

Your tuition and fees typically cover the following:

  • Round-trip economy class airfare
  • Overnight accommodations (double occupancy)
  • Ground transportation
  • Sightseeing tours and/or cultural activities
  • Corporate visits
  • Breakfast and lunch each day
  • Airport entrance or departure taxes
