College of Business and Economics Independent Study policy for MBA students states:

  1. Independent study instruction is not considered an integral part of a normal graduate program. However, independent study credit may be approved for those special learning activities that cannot be achieved through regular courses. Except in unusual circumstances, independent study credit will not be accepted as substitute for required courses. In those usual cases, a course substitution request must accompany the proposal.
  2. In order for independent study credit to be applied toward degree requirements, the student must have satisfactorily completed the stated course requirements, and a copy of the final report must be filed in the MBA Programs Office. If either the faculty sponsor or the student has concerns about the independent study assignment, The MBA Committee may intervene. No more than six hours of independent study credit may be used toward completion of the MBA degree requirements and no more than three hours of independent study credit may be taken in any one semester.
  3. Independent study can only be undertaken if the student has a 3.0 GPA or higher.
  4. In order to insure that assignments undertaken meet the high academic standards set by the graduate faculty, the assignment proposal must include the plan of study and the specific responsibilities of the student and the faculty sponsor. It is considered normal for a student to spend at least 75 hours of time for a three credit special program, including 15 hours per semester with the faculty sponsor.
