Frequently Asked Questions

Computers, E-mail, and Internet Accounts

Q: When will I receive an e-mail account?

A: Once you have officially accepted UD’s offer of admission, returned the acceptance letter, and registered for your first classes, you may log in to set up your UD student e-mail account. Instructions for setting up your account can be found at the University's Welcome Page. Your ID is your UD student number indicated in your acceptance letter from the Office of Graduate Studies (in most cases, 7xx-xx-xxxx).

Please note: It is very important that you establish a UD e-mail address. E-mail is the primary communication tool for faculty and administration. Let us know how to reach you during your tenure as a student by forwarding your University e-mail address, mailing address, and phone number as soon as possible to MBA Services.

Q: How can I access my e-mail?

A: Once your account is created, UD e-mail can be accessed at https://mail.udel.edu/.

Q: How can I forward my e-mail to another address (e.g., work or home e-mail)?

A: Simply go to the UD Network Page and log in (you must first create an account). Click on “Forwarding E-mail” and follow the instructions.

Q: Is a laptop necessary?

A: A laptop isn’t necessary but does prove extremely useful. You will find yourself working in groups often during the semester. The ability to bring a laptop to these meetings is helpful. The University has special pricing agreements with certain vendors; check here for more information on purchasing a laptop.

Q: How do I register my laptop for Internet access on campus?

A: Simply go to the UD Network Page and log in (you must first create an account). Click on “Register a computer for Internet access” and follow the instructions. Once you have added your computer, the UD network might take up to 15 minutes to recognize the change. Eventually, you will have wireless and wired Internet access through the UD campus network.

Student IDs

Q: How do I obtain a student ID?

A: Obtain your UD Student Identification Card after course registration at the Student Services Building on Lovett Avenue between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. (Call 302-831-2759 for assistance or for more information about student identification.)

Q: Why do I need an ID?

A: Your ID card gives you access to certain facilities on campus such as the Carpenter Sports Building and the Purnell Computer Lab among others. At the computer labs, your student ID must be swiped before you can print (each student starts the semester with a $5.00 printing allocation). An ID is needed to check out books from the Morris Library. It will also give you access to discounted or free tickets to UD events.

Parking

Q: How can I purchase a parking permit?

A: Permits can be purchased at the Public Safety Office on Academy Street, or online.

Q: What kind of permit do I need?

A: As a commuting graduate student, you can purchase either a Red or Gold permit. Consider the time and location of your classes when determining which permit suits your needs.

Wilmington classes:

The Wilmington campus lot only requires a Red parking permit.

Newark classes:

Students with daytime classes or who hold graduate assistant (GA) positions during the day can opt to purchase a Gold permit. Though more expensive, this allows you to park in the lots closest to Lerner Hall. A Red permit is cheaper but would force you to park at the field house. If you only plan to take evening classes, you can get by with a Red permit. This allows you to park in the non-restricted Gold lots after 4 p.m.

Q: What are other parking options?

A: Trabant Garage is a pay-to-park facility located conveniently close to Alfred Lerner Hall. The garage charges $.60 per half hour or part thereof before 10:30 p.m. during the week and $.30 per half hour or part thereof after 10:30 p.m. and on weekends.

Textbooks

Q: When should I buy my books?

A: Unless your professor contacts you with specific assignments prior to class, you do not “need” your textbook prior to the first class meeting. It is often wise, however, to obtain your textbooks prior to your first class to ensure they do not sell out. The bookstores do allow students to preorder textbooks.

Q: Where can they be purchased?

A: Fall texts are generally stocked by the campus bookstore starting in August. It is located on Academy Street in the Perkins Student Center and can also be found online. Lieberman’s Bookstore and Delaware Book Exchange, both located on Main Street, also sell textbooks. All facilities give students the option to preorder textbooks.

Q: The registration process is saying my class has no required textbooks. Is that correct?

A: If books are not listed, either the University is waiting for the list from the professor or a course packet is still in production. Check back at a later date for further information. If classes are beginning and still no books are listed, either wait for the first class session or e-mail your professor.

Paying Your Bill

Q: How do I pay my bill?

A: Payments can be made in person at the Student Services Building on Lovett Avenue. They can also be made online. You will need your student ID. If you don’t remember this number, login to UDSIS and it will be displayed in the upper lefthand corner. Questions can be directed to Account Services. Please provide your student ID, full name, and date of birth when corresponding via e-mail.

Q: Can I pay in installments?

A: Yes. To help distribute the tuition burden over the course of the semester, many students opt to pay their tuition in monthly installments. There is a $50 Installment Payment Plan Fee.

Other Common Questions

Q: What is WebCT?

A: Your professors can opt to post class-related information such as notes, slides, grades, and e-mails on a service called WebCT. To access this information, you will need your UdelNetID and password. Note: Only your classes using the WebCT will be displayed on the homepage.

Q: What is UDSIS?

A: This site allows you to view your class schedule, grades, payments, scholarships, and other related information. You also use this site to register for classes. Click here to access UDSIS, or navigate to the UD Home Page and click "UDSIS" at the top of the page.

Q: What kind of calculator do I need?

A: In general, UD MBA students need fairly simple calculators. For ACCT 800, you need a very basic four-function calculator (+, -, x, ÷). For BUAD 820/831, you will need a calculator that can handle square roots. For Finance classes, you will want a financial calculator such as Texas Instruments’ BA II Plus. This financial calculator can handle most calculations in ACCT 800 and the BUAD 820/831 classes as well.

Q: I’m an international student. Is there anything special I need to do?

A: Yes, you should report to Foreign Student Scholar Services (FSSS) upon arrival on campus. FSSS is located in the Student Services Building on Lovett Avenue.
